I am pleased to announce that I am stop #22 on the WEST Austin Studio tour. Please consider dropping by, I will be celebrating color and texture, by showing a selection of abstracts, street art and texture driven photography. The Tour’s final weekend is May 5th/6th from 11am to 6pm both days. Get out and enjoy some of Austin’s great local artist community, and I hope to see you too.
In case you are not able to see DISTILLATION in person, and are interested in the show, please take a look at the gallery http://controlimages.zenfolio.com/distillation. Most of the pieces are also available for purchase in a few formats and sizes. If you are interested in the wide pieces (Truth, S/F/Z), please contact me directly.
Once again, thank you all who came out to the opening.
I am pleased to announce my first solo gallery show – DISTILLATION opens tonight.
The camera lens is an eye that immortalizes moments, intensifies emotion, freezes the dynamic, defines movement in the inert. It sees what evades everyday consciousness and offers a vision of what might be or could have been. DISTILLATION combines vivid hues and textures of overlooked urban structures, uncoverings of street art, studies of human form and character, and abstract re-imaginations of reality. In this celebration of the richness of human experience, we see and feel the intensity of the everyday and access the potential of the seemingly mundane.
DISTILLATION runs through February 2nd, at Salvage Vanguard Theater (2803 E Manor Rd, Austin, Texas 78722).
If you can, please join me at the opening party Saturday January 3rd from 5-7pm.
April was the first time I got to shoot as an official photographer for the Texas Rollergirls. It was certainly interesting to see the bout from zebra land. I never felt like I got into a groove the whole night, not sure if it was nerves, or just trying different camera settings.
The first bout was the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers and the Hotrod Honeys. The Heartbreakers took an early lead, and held it till the second period, when the Honeys pulled a great comeback. The match ended in a nail biter of a final jam. I have also never seen the penalty box have such a revolving door.
Final score: Honky Tonk Heartbreakers 136 – Hotrod Honeys 134
Next up was Hell Marys and the Hustlers. The Hell Marys took an early lead, and held it for the whole bout. The Hell Marys are now up 2-0 on the season, and have looked impressive.
Final score: Hell Marys 165 – Hustlers 69
The Derby Brats scrimmaged during both Halftimes, and they were just great.
This month I decided to do something different, and just use some of the B/W shots I ended up with.
Hope to see you there next month, it should be a great matchup: The Texecutioners vs the Portland Wheels of Justice. Both all star teams, it should make for some great flat track action.
Maya was my loyal friend, companion of 15+ years, sweet dog, and most of all my lovely little girl. Hard decisions sometimes must be made, and even though they are the right decision, it never makes them any easier. I will miss her immensely. I know in time, that the painful memories fade, and the happier memory intensify. This is a good thing, since I really do want to remember her in the special way that made my life better. I hope you, and the others that have gone before are all in a much better place, but never doubt I remember you all, and on some days miss you horribly, but I still relish the times we shared. A few photos of her, not necessarily good, but good to me, and in the end that is what really counts, just capturing moments, and memories. My little girl, may your runs be long, the scents fresh, and I know you will catch the deer in the end. Thank you for sharing so much with me, I love you so much, and I will miss you terribly.
Another show that I had the pleasure of shooting the promo photos, starts its run at Salvage Vanguard Theater, Fridays / Saturdays through April 21st. If you are a fan of Doctor Who, then you should definitely check out a show or two. Tickets are available here. Tip of the hat to Michael Ferstenfeld for the spif poster design!
A show that I had the pleasure of shooting the promo photography opens tomorrow. After School Improv, improvised after school specials at the Hideout Theatre March 10th – April 7th at 6PM. It looks to be a fun blast from the past on how we all should have lived our lives, if we had just believed those after school specials. Check it out, should be fun!
I was lucky enough to shoot the TX Roller Girls season opener last weekend (Photogs take note, they are changing their camera policy “pro” gear may require media credentials, please check the website before the bout). It was fun to be able to see Derby again, and I ended up with a nice vantage point om the rail at Turn 1. These bouts were the rematches of last season’s matches to determine 3rd Place and 1st Place. It was a slower paced night than I expected with lots of chanting of “occupy the jammer line”, but there was still plenty of action. In the end Hell Mary’s defeated the Heartbreakers 144 – 87, and the Hotrod Honeys upset last years champions the Hustlers 141 – 59. A very pleasant surprise was the Minor Mishap Marching Band as the fearured band.
If you enjoy the slideshow, here is the complete set.
See you April 21st for the next bout!
Recently, I have had the pleasure of doing set / promo photography for the wonderful folks over at Blue Goggles Films. They are currently doing a video game themed short film every month. I am especially fond of the Valentine’s special – Twisted Metal: Be Mine. Great people, great movies, be sure to check them out. Here are a few behind the scenes shots, from Be Mine filming which was a 12+ hour day in a 30 degree Groovy Lube.
I was able to photograph a few shows this year for the Out of Bounds comedy festival in Austin TX. I shot mostly improv comedy, and a single sketch comedy show. Everything I saw was solid and entertaining, two shows ended up being some of the best improv that I have ever seen.
The Confidence Men: Improvised David Mamet playing the Hall of Justice, as very-Mamet versions of the DC comics characters was inspired and wonderful, and Mayfly Late-night Improvised Clusterfunk was an expression of demented happiness that filled the whole room with joy.
